Older Real Estate Agents: What Millennials Are Saying About You
If you’re not convinced, take a look at these stats from NAR and Pew Research:
- Median age of today’s ‘millennial’: 26 years old
- Median age of today’s smart phone app user: 26 years old
- Median age of today’s real estate agent: 56 years old
So we have about a 30 year gap to reckon with. But the good news is that, by all indications, millennials are ready to do business with you! We came across a comment thread from a recent article on the topic of millennial home buyers. The young person identifies herself as a millennial and writes the following:
“Speaking as a millennial, I would say because of technology, patience is at an all-time low. But technology does not replace agent’s knowledge. It can’t. People may use the internet for research, but nothing replaces a person sharing their expertise with you. Going back to patience being at all-time low, just give me what I need, when I need it, in the format that I want, in a way that I like (whether it’s email, text, whatsapp), and answer my questions quickly, because I don’t want to wait. Communicate with me like my friends would. Then you win.”
Strong words, but honest ones. How you plan to respond is the real question. Is it possible to provide your younger clients with the value of your knowledge, yet in a way that respects their communications style?
It may be time to rethink the way you approach the challenge of marketing to and working with a new tech-savvy generation of home buyers. Consider replacing some of your old communications tools with new ones. Today’s apps are easier to learn than you think and will save you time, once you get used to using them. And, most importantly, they will help you open up the phones, minds and wallets of your new buying community.
